While solar panels on your residential or commercial property are designed to harness the power and energy of the sun’s rays, a radiant barrier – which is required for Title 24 compliance – ensures the heat from those rays is not brought into the living areas.
In this issue, the reputable mechanical engineers in Los Angeles at K2D Consulting Engineers, will discuss the basics of radiant barriers, and what makes them so effective.

What are Radiant Barriers?

Installed just beneath the roof deck, radiant barriers are specifically designed to reflect but not absorb the heat collected on the roof.

How do Radiant Barriers Reflect Heat without Absorbing It?

While there are different types of radiant barriers, their power to reflect heat comes from the material from which they are made from:

  • Cardboard
  • Air infiltration material
  • Kraft paper (a smooth papers material normally made for wrapping)

Even though radiant barriers are required by Title 24 for all new construction in California, some roofing companies take advantage of their unwary customers by not properly installing the radiant barrier.

To meet Title 24 compliance, the radiant barrier must be installed in such a way that it doesn’t make contact with electrical wiring, contain a barrier to prevent dust from collecting, and include a 1” space for air circulation above. It can’t be merely secured directly on top of the existing sheeting.
